Council tax benefit

Council tax benefit is a means-tested benefit for unemployed people or those on low incomes who have to pay council tax.

You need to apply to your local council for council tax benefit.  An application form should be given to you if you claim JobSeeker's Allowance.

There is no liability to pay council if you are under 18, but people on income support, income-based JobSeeker's Allowance or other benefits still need to apply, as do pensioners.  People living alone qualify for a 25% automatic discount to their council tax bill, as do disabled people.  Council tax benefit can also be backdated up to 52 weeks, and you can claim up to 13 week's in advance if you know you may be eligible for the benefit.

Full information on Council tax benefit is on the Direct.gov website.
