General notes and deadlines
General things to note about the Artists international development fund
- You can only make one application per financial year (from end March to start of April) whether it is successful or not. Make sure you make the strongest possible application at the right time, or you won't get a chance to apply again until the following financial year. You can apply for the same activity if an application is unsuccessful, but you should make changes to your unsuccessful application before submitting it again.
- Although the fund is intended for individual artists, groups of artists who have a track record of collaborating together can apply. If you are applying as a group, include a CV for each member of the group formatted as one document: you can only upload one CV attachment per application.
- Although you can make an online application whenever you like, Arts Council England only select three times a year:

- Make sure you plan your activity to begin after the grant could be awarded – Arts Council England will not fund projects that need to begin before they could decide on your application. You’ll be sent an email to let you know if you’ve been successful or not.
- The guidance is vague about how long a period of time the activity can cover: is aims to be ‘flexible and responsive to artists’ needs’ but doesn’t give exact timescales for how long you can visit, or any space between your visit and an exchange / return visit by your partner.
Arts Council England have published an interview with poet Nathan Jones, who received funding for a five-day research trip to Berlin in summer 2012. Find out more about how the fund works and his tips for applying.
