    Fineart.ac.uk is a national web-based collection of work by staff and students of UK higher education institutions who have made a significant contribution to UK fine art education through practice. The images are drawn upon work from the mid 19th century through to the present day held within 10 institutions (from the University of the Arts London, Slade School of Fine Art, Royal College of Art, Norwich, University of Brighton - The Aldrich Collection, Birmingham, Leeds, University of Ulster, Glasgow, Dundee and the collection of the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA)).

  • Images of England

    Images of England is a heritage initiative run by the National Monuments Record, the public archive of English Heritage. The project aims to create a 'point in time' photographic record of every listed building in England. Each of the 370,000 images are being posted alongside existing list descriptions for each building to create what will be one of the largest free to access digital image libraries in the world. Simple, 'quick' searches need no registration, but advanced searches require a free registration to access.

    The NAL is a major reference library and the Victoria and Albert's curatorial department for the art, craft and design of the book. The library contains collections relating to both fine art and applied arts practice. Admission to the V&A is now free. Anyone wishing to use the library should contact them for visiting times and the readers' tickets available.

    The site gives a very good impression of the amount and types of work held in this public collection split between artist, portfolio collections and current touring exhibitions. As the collection mainly tours overseas and because of security, to see a specific work you have to book an appointment with the Visual Arts Department (assuming the work is in storage at that time) before visiting. The online gallery shows a good amount of works.

Its sources include archives from the Imperial War Museum, London College of Fashion, National Arts Education Archive and The Design Council Archive, and covers Fine Art, Design, Photography, Architecture, Applied Arts, History and Theory of Art, Media, Museum Studies and Conservation, and professional practice.
