There has been an important increase in the creation of artist-run organisations in the last fifteen years in France.

The FRAAP is the most important federation of associations and artists' collectives. Their internet site includes listings of all the associations and collectives of the Fraap network. It also contains practical advice regarding contracts and payments, but is in French only.

In craft, the Guild of Ceramic Artists and Ateliers d'Art de France were founded by French working craftsmen a hundred years ago. Their aim was to defend the craftsmen's professional interests.

As the lead body for craft, Ateliers d'Art de France acts as flag-bearer for its members. It has a wide brief to support its members, stage and promote their skills and help them to develop national and international sales of their creations.

As a Guild, Ateliers d'Art de France gathers around five thousand members, craftsmen, creators and small companies using a wide variety of materials: wood, ceramics, paper, metals, resin and composite, clay, textiles, vegetable products, glass etc.

'Ateliers d'Art', a current affairs magazine that appears every two months, gives information relating to artistic and creative professions. There are English summaries of the major news items.

The French entity of the World Crafts Council Europe is called the Fédération nationale des Ateliers. Its mission is to promote craft and adresses local authorities and institutions and to organise exhibitions, events, training courses, seminars and conferences.
