Artlaw provides free online legal advice to visual artists and craftspeople based in England.

As a part of our core services, Artquest provides legal opinions to professional visual arts and crafts practitioners based in England.

  • Artlaw is intended to be a first-stop on the legal pathways that many artists come across in their careers. Artlaw is not designed to provide ongoing legal support for complex legal queries, and cannot give advice on specific contract wording or legal documents.
  • The Artlaw legal advice service is free; Artquest pays a panel of arts legal experts to provide this advice, but does not pass on the costs to practitioners.
  • The best form of legal action is prevention - practitioners are advised at every stage to ensure they have proper contracts or letters of agreement with organisations and individuals they work with; to know their rights under copyright law; and understand their tax and other legal obligations. One of the best ways to do this is to have a thorough look through this site.

For more information on who we can help, and what kind of queries we can respond to, please see the Who we can help page.

If you are ineligible for help from the Artlaw legal advice service, there are other free or affordable services in London or nationally. If none of these are suitable, you can refer to a paid-for legal advisor.
