  • The Carriage House

    Since 1993, the Carriage House has been used as a project space where contemporary artists can create and exhibit new and experimental work. The 10,000 square foot structure is located next door to the Islip Art Museum galleries in Brookwood Hall, East Islip, New York, approximately 50 miles from Manhattan on the south shore of Long Island. Work that cannot be situated in more formal galleries and museums because of technical considerations is frequently accepted at the Carriage House. The Islip Art Museum presents exhibitions of projects and installations by new and emerging artists at the Carriage House site, including Projects, an exhibition culled from the Islip Art Museum's annual call for proposals.     Artpace provides each artist with a two-month residency, which includes a materials budget, a weekly living stipend, an apartment, and studio/exhibition space, as well as fully equipped wood, metal, and computer facilities, complete with technical and administrative support. The residency is followed by a two-month exhibition of the project created, which is fully documented and accompanied by a full-color exhibition brochure. All art made during the residency belongs to the artist. Artpace also invites guest curators to select three artists for each residency. Guest curators conduct extensive field work by visiting up to fifty recommended studios in Texas—making it possible for individual artists to meaningfully connect with internationally-recognized curators.   • Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program

    Set in the high plains of south eastern New Mexico, the residency programme was established in 1967 by Roswell artist and philanthropist Donald Anderson in conjunction with the Roswell Museum and Art Center. International visual artists apply for residencies of one year, including accommodation, a studio, board and a monthly stipend of US $800 along with $100 per month for every dependent living with the grantee. The studios are large, open spaces that measure approximately 20'x25'x10'. These areas are well-lighted and convertible to the artist's requirements. Currently pay for the cost of art materials. Apply with a submission of fifteen to twenty slides of recent work and up to ten pages of supporting material (CV, reviews, etc), enclosing an SAE for return of submitted material. Application fee: US $25.

    The Mattress Factory has purchased and renovated nine properties in Pittsburgh's inner city community to become exhibition galleries, an artist-created garden, public and educational spaces, artists' residencies, office space, visitor amenities and a parking lot. The Artists residency is currently (2010) not running, but will start again in the future.

    VSC offers year-round 2-12 week independent Residencies. Residents receive a private studio, room and 3 meals each day plus access to prominent Visiting Artists and Writers who offer slide talks, studio visits, and readings. A low-residency MFA is also available. Fellowship application deadlines are set and different to the other deadline, check the deadline dates on the website.

    100 miles north of Anchorage, and just south of Talkeetna, their facilities comprise 80 acres of homesteaded land including a time-honored California ranch style home to accommodate artists. Work space is ample, spanning a shared studio space and their mission is to support creative discovery by providing unique time and space to practitioners. Sessions are on during the summer.

    International residency program providing access to a specialized studio facility for professional sculptors. There are no geographic or stylistic restrictions. The selection is made by the Sculpture Space Review Committee and rotating guest panelists. Primary criteria are quality, originality, and

    Twenty artists are selected every year. Each receives a stipend toward residency expenses. Residencies are scheduled between September and August, excluding December, with no more than four artists in residency at one time. Artists are expected to stay for a full two months. Residents have 24/7 access to the studio. They are responsible for their own materials, specialized tools, fees for work done outside the premises, and for an assistant, should they require one. Residents typically spend approximately $1000 per month on materials and expenses. A basic command of the English language is necessary.     Visual Studies Workshop sponsors artists' residencies in photography, artists' books, digital video and multimedia, 16mm film and analogue video. Residencies are project-based and are for a period of up to one month. VSW will provide access to facilities and housing on the premises. Honoraria provided as available.     Raid Projects is an exhibition and curatorial organization that is dedicated to supporting and facilitating innovative cultural production in Los Angeles. Raid Projects sustains a year-round artist in residence program largely focused on providing international artists with living accommodation, studio space and access to the LA art world. There is no bursary for the residency though, and artists are requested to pay a $2000 fee for 1 month stay.

    The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) invites contemporary artists to create new work using experimental materials and techniques.  Artist in Residence Program hosts emerging and established regional, national and international contemporary artists who have a demonstrated commitment to innovation and exploration. To that end, the FWM supports artistic experimentation by providing fees and materials to artists, and employing its facilities and staff to address their creative needs. Artists-in-residence are drawn from all disciplines, including painting, sculpture, architecture and design, conceptual and installation art, performance and video. Working collaboratively with the FWM's staff of printers and technicians, artists are introduced to new techniques, materials, and resources, and are thus able to realize projects that would not otherwise be possible. Through this collaborative creative process, artists stretch the boundaries not only of their own work, and of the creative possibility of the various media, but also of the larger development of contemporary art.

    Artists working in various printmaking techniques, photo-processes, book arts and digital media including sound/video production can apply to become an Artist-in-Residence at Kala Art Institute. Residency applications are accepted four times per year. Note that this is a studio residency only, housing is not included. The Institute also runs a Fellowish Competition, providing studio space for a six month residency and a cash award. Artists may apply for 1, 2, or 3-month residencies, and must specify the desired residency length in the application. There are four deadline dates each year.
