Equality and Human Rights Commission

On 1 October 2007 the three equality commissions: Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), Disability Rights Commission (DRC) and Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) merged into the new Equality and Human Rights Commission. The new commission brings together the work of the three previous equality commissions and also takes on responsibility for the other aspects of equality: age, sexual orientation and religion or belief, as well as human rights. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has extensive legal powers and a dedicated directorate of expert lawyers who are specialists in equality law. It is well equipped to take legal action on behalf of individuals, especially where there are strategic opportunities to push the boundaries, or to clarify and improve the law. They can also offer advice through their helpline and online resources.

Working in the Department for Work and Pensions in Sheffield and London and responsible for strategy and policies to support people making decisions about working and retirement. The Age Positive campaign promotes the benefits of employing a mixed-age workforce that includes older and younger people, encouraging employers to make decisions about recruitment, training and retention that do not discriminate against someone because of their age. They use publications, research, press, events and awards initiatives to get the message across - and to help employers work with the legislation to outlaw age discrimination in employment.

Health and Safety Executive

Ensures that legislation about health and safety in the workplace is put into effect. Offices throughout the country provide information about safe conditions and materials and give advice on the latest directives. The information centre (open 8.30-5 Mon-Fri) can assist with enquiries on a wide range of health and safety issues. The HSE also publishes a range of booklets and free leaflets.

If you sustain a serious injury at work whilst in the studio or during the course of employment elsewhere the first thing you should do is contact the local Health and Safety Executive help line for London. They will investigate and consider whether there has been a breach of Health and Safety Act, and take action against the employer.

Law Society Accident Line

If you have been harmed or injured whilst at work in the studio or during the course of employment elsewhere, and would like to pursue a claim for compensation contact the Law Society Accident Line. They will listen to your case refer you to a solicitor who will give you a free half hours consultation before. Then if the solicitor believes you to have a case for compensation they will take the case on.
