Provides comprehensive information on its functions and your legal responsibilities in paying tax. Services for UK companies trading overseas with little or no exporting experience, from initial queries and market research to advice on finding the right contacts, export procedures and legal issues. It is your responsibility to register if you are self-employed, by telephoning your nearest office or checking the site - your tax office will then send you the relevant forms and on receipt of them will issue you with a tax reference number. London's Government-funded visual art and crafts funders, Arts Council England supplies monies via its Grants for the Arts programme, recently cut by 35% in the face of money being redirected by government to the Olympics, making this even more competitive. They run free seminars to answer your questions, and their website (above) provides further advice. In 2003/04, Grants for the Arts distributed £1.78 million to individual artists working in London through 316 awards (and £7.4 million to organisations through 445 awards, and £4 million for touring through 97 awards). In all, ACE received 2,500 application, including some that were ineligible. ACE are currently working to encourage more applications from freelance curators, project organisers and critics, who are currently under-represented in the funding allocation. Eligible projects include research and development, travel (including international), networking events and independent projects. They are also keen to support activities promoting critical debate on the production and presentation of contemporary visual art; for example, events, seminars, conferences, publications (paper based / electronic), periodicals, catalogues and artists' books.

The Winston Churchill Trust was set up after Churchill's death by public subscriptions to fund Travelling Fellowships. All British Citizens are eligible for the annual awards. The Fellowships are intended to enable men and women from all walks of life to acquire knowledge and experience abroad. Churchill Fellows can be of any age and in any occupation. Everyone has an equal chance; a lack of qualifications is not a bar to an award as every application is judged on the worth of the individual and the merit of the project. Past award winners have included nurses, artists, scientists, engineers, farmers, conservationists, carers, craft workers, artisans, members of the emergency services, sportsmen and women and people with disabilities. Successful applicants receive a grant to cover all your Fellowship expenses: return air fare, daily living, travel within the countries being visited and, in exceptional cases, certain home expenses. In 2000, the Trust awarded grants in excess of £600,000. You will also be insured against accident, medical expenses and loss of baggage while you are away. Grants usually cover a stay overseas of 4-8 weeks. Categories for applications vary - and change every year - but include, in Performing and Creative Arts, choreographers, composers, writers, painters and sculptors.

The Foundation aims to develop good relations between the United Kingdom and Japan by advancing the education of the people of both nations in each other's culture, society and achievements. ROSL arts offers a scholarship (maximum value £3,000) for an artist of up to 35 years of age to spend four weeks in a Commonwealth country of their choice. From 2006 the travel Scholarships are no longer awarded from open submission, nominations are solicited from selected visual arts institutions instead. Supported by Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts, Franklin Furnace awards grants between $2,000 and $5,000 to performance artists, allowing them to produce major works anywhere in the State of New York. Artists from all areas of the world are invited to apply. Franklin Furnace offers artists an honorarium (this year of $5,000) and a residency facilitated by Franklin Furnace, for a 2-4 month duration at a physical or online venue appropriate to your proposed work. For THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2003, they want to continue to expand the technology available to their artists through Parsons and beyond. The residencies may take place in the Spring or Fall of 2003. Artists who are interested in developing new artwork for the Internet are encouraged to apply.

The Fulbright Commission, an independent foundation which funds international students to study in the USA. It invites applications once a year to facilitate research and/or lecturing in the USA for a minimum of 8 months. Applicants must be EU citizens normally resident in the UK and have, or expect to obtain, an undergraduate degree (minimum 2.1 award). The British School at Rome and the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art invite applications for a Senior Research Fellowship. This Fellowship commemorates the life and work of the artist Helen Chadwick. It is expected that the position will attract visual artists who have identified a project that could be made possible or enhanced by spending periods of time both in Rome and Oxford.
