As well as public or private funding, there are a number of ways in which artists and craftspeople can earn money, either in direct relation to their practice (selling work, commissions etc) or indirectly (lecturing / teaching, education programmes with galleries, arts administration etc).  Furthermore, a lot of artists have part time jobs unrelated to the arts to support their practice.
