How to use Artquest

Introduction

The Artquest website is the principal delivery point for all of our practical advice and critical debate, free to access by any one in the world.  Other Artquest services are only open to professional visual artists and craftspeople living and working in London.  This page explains how to get the best out of Artquest, wherever you are.

Q. How does Artquest work?

A. A lot of practical advice and information useful to visual artists and craftspeople is already available, somewhere on the internet or maintained by another organisation - it's simply a matter of knowing how and where to access it.  Artquest provides a central signposting service to this material, available for free 24 hours a day online, and tops it up with unique information not available anywhere else.  Many of the information listings pages on this site will redirect you to sources of help and advice, but if we can't find another organisation supplying something that you ask us for, we'll do the research ourselves and add it to our site.  In this way, the Artquest site has grown from around 50 pages at our launch in December 2001 to over 800 today.

Artquest’s staff is small – we have one full-time and three part-time members of staff, made up of arts practitioners.  Because of this, we are able to find out quickly what other arts practitioners are looking for, and make the most of existing sources of free information on the internet, linking this from our site.

Q. Working with the Artquest site

A. The Artquest site contains over 800 pages of free to access information and advice, and can be used by anyone in the world without registration or fees.

Artquest provides other services that can only be used by artists who live and work in London, but the site can be used by all.

We’ve split the site into the main sections that most artists and craftspeople will go through in their career – making new work, showing and selling their work, managing and creating a career in London, self promotion and networking, working overseas, getting training, earning and thinking about money and legal issues practitioners face.  These general overview sections are rich and complex areas which you can explore by clicking on the appropriate menu option at the top-left of any screen or using the search facility.

If you are a bit daunted by sifting through 800 pages, or you know what you’re looking for, we have an easy to use search box on every page under the main menu.

Although this site focuses on the needs of London-based practitioners, many of the articles, opportunities and events will be useful for practitioners across the UK and overseas.

If you have an event, opportunity or organisation you think we might like to list, you can suggest your own update to the Artquest website - see the Submit a Listing page for details on how to do this and what we can accept.

The Artquest website is designed to be easy to use and simple to learn.  If you have any comments about our website, please contact Russell Martin via the Ask Artquest a Question page.  We welcome any comments, complimentary or not, that help us make our service better.

Q. Join the Artquest E-Letter

A. Over 6,500 practitioners in London, the UK and overseas are members of our free email bulletin.  We tend to advertise most of our services only on this list to save revenues for paying for artists projects - you can read the latest one on this site.  The E-Letter list is free to join.

For more information join our E-Letter Bulletin list for free email updates.

Q. Ask Artquest a Question

A. If the information you require is not on the site, and you are a London-based practitioner, you can contact us with any query you may have relating to any aspect of your practice.  Use our Ask us a Question form to contact any of our members of Artquest staff.  Depending on the complexity of your query and perceived need, we may contact you by email, telephone or arrange a one to one meeting with you.

See the Ask us a Question page for more details on how to do this.

If you are not based in London, our About Artquest page has some links to organisations who may be able to help. We regret that we can only respond to emails sent by London-based practitioners.

Q. Projects and events

A. Special projects, residencies and events are constantly in development by Artquest (alone and in partnership with other arts organisations) throughout the year.  Visit the Artquest projects pages to view a current timetable of upcoming projects.  Only London-based practitioners are eligible to apply for Artquest projects and a London mailing address will be requested during booking.
