Total Madrid

Artquest and Liquidacion Total are pleased to announce that the first recipients of Total Madrid will be allsopp&weir (Paul Allsopp and Andy Weir). Paul and Andy will be resident in Liquidacion Total’s gallery space in Madrid for six weeks over August and September 2008.

Total Madrid is an opportunity for artists working in any medium and at any stage of their career to live and work in Madrid from1 August to 12 September 2008, preparing a new body of work for exhibition from 12 September - 18 October 2008 in Liquidacion Total, an artist-led project space in the heart of Madrid.

Artquest is providing travel costs up to £100, production and publicity expenses of £750 and subsistence costs of £500.

Accommodation is also provided for six weeks.  allsopp&weir will live in an apartment close to Liquidacion Total’s venue, using the gallery space as a studio and installing the show directly.

About allsopp&weir

The starting point for allsopp&weir’s work (mainly in video) is what a 'political’ or 'critical’ aesthetics could mean today in the context of global capitalism. They focus on processes of cultural translation and exchange, as well as the effects of global flow of terrorism and immigration, exploring this with a particular relation to sound: affects of the voice at edges of language and communication. They have worked with forms of language learning and transformations of culturally resonant texts such as the Islamic Call to Prayer and The Communist Manifesto.

After finishing an MFA at Goldsmiths in 2007, allsopp&weir have begun developing a new body of work and are looking for the structure and support of a residency programme as a way of temporarily working more freely and intensively outside of the constant economic demands of London life. A residency at this crucial time will allow them a unique opportunity to share research, working processes and finished work with a new audience through talks / open studios as well as the final exhibition.

About Liquidacion Total

Liquidación Total is a non-profit cultural association based in the Malasaña quarter of Madrid.  They support, develop and exhibit international contemporary art projects aimed at both a specialist and non-specialist visual arts audience.  Art projects are a means for dialogue and reflection on the gallery surroundings from a critical and questioning standpoint.  Located in the very centre of Madrid, Liquidacion Total offers alternative activities in which leisure is not related to consumption.

Since 2002, Liquidación Total has offered a programme distinct from commercial or public galleries, preferring instead to generate one-off projects.  Responding to an impression of Madrid as lacking in an artistic and creative presence beyond museums and galleries, Liquidacion Total aims to present emerging artists, international inter-generational exchange, create a dialogue among different social agents and present non-market oriented art projects.

Liquidacion Total emphasises its international programme, diverse and collaborative discourse with their audience, creative freedom for artists and their non-profit nature.  They understand the importance of creating a network with the other art spaces both nationally and internationally, collaborating with, amongst others, El Ojo Atómico, Los 29 Enchufes, La Enana Marrón, Cruce, Rakkett (Norway) and Galerie für Landschaftkunst (Germany).

Liquidación Total is a member of the Madrid Independent Art Spaces Network.  For more information on their programme visit the Liquidacion Total website.
