Artquest projects in 2002

This Artquest / engage joint seminar event was primarily for artists, gallery educators, teachers and training providers. It focussed on artists’ work with audiences, and explored artists’ training and support needs in ‘artist as educator’ roles. Contributions were from artists, UK institutions and Arts Councils.
2002 and 2003
In order to meet more artists face to face in a relaxed atmosphere, the Artquest team hired a stand at the 2002 and 2003 Fresh Art Fairs in the Business Design Centre, Angel, London. Artquest staff were on hand to give advice and information to exhibiting and visiting artists, as well as contribute to seminars and training events during the Fair. Artquest awarded a £500 prize for the best London artist in the show at the 2003 Fair.
Critical Directions provided one-to-one career advice service to London’s visual artists and craftspeople over four projects in 2002 / 2003. It proved to be a successful and heavily over-subscribed service, with places on the course being fully booked within hours of them being released.
Sessions specialising in emerging, established and newly graduated artists were run comprising studio visits, one-to-one sessions, portfolio critique, career development advice and feedback sessions. The final sessions also involved a group seminar followed by individual one-to-one follow up sessions in artists’ studios.
Sessions were given by Libby Anson, who graduated as a painter and printmaker. After further training as a curator she worked in both the public and private gallery sectors, concentrating mainly on exhibition organisation and education. She left galleries in 1989 to become an art critic and a lecturer in fine art practice and professional studies. Since 1999 she has worked independently as a professional practice and personal and creative development advisor with various individuals and organisations. She now works primarily as an artists coach and consultant.
Critical Directions was superseded by other elements of our current programme, such as the One to One advisory sessions and our ongoing programme of professional development training
