Essential advice and information for artists in England starting out in their professional career

Primer for Kindle or E-reader
Primer for Kindle or E-reader – everything you wanted to know about being an artist

PRIMER is an ebook for early career and new starting visual artists, whether graduating from art school or just switching career. It’s aim is to cover everything you need to consider in your first couple of years after starting up as an artist, like:

  • finding and working with galleries
  • meeting curators
  • understanding your rights
  • living in London on a low income, or if to relocate
  • finding a studio
  • maintaining a network
  • and useful places to get more advice.

It also provides a crucial introduction to our online resources tailored specifically for new artists, of any age, who are entering the visual arts for the first time.

The first issue appeared in 2011 and it has been updated regularly since. The latest version is published in October 2024. If you’re an artist in Scotland, see PRIMER Scotland, created in 2023 by Artquest, Glasgow School of Art and Creative Scotland.
